MORE THAN FLY flew from São Paulo to Manaus aboard LATAM's new Boeing 787 Dreamliner. A Flight Report with details, from the flight path to the entertainment of the new Premium Business – LATAM's Executive Class. Boarding with us.

Wednesday, November 10, 2021, at 4:50 am I was already on the Bandeirantes Highway for a memorable day in my life! Fly the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner from LATAM.

·

For those who follow and follow “MORE THAN FLY” they learned that one of the great news that LATAM brought during the resumption of flights was the Boeing 787 to fly in the fleet of the Brazilian airline –   if you didn't know, you can can access it here the news already published days ago.

The day was typical of São Paulo, cloudy and cold. At 5:06 am, I was already leaving the Bandeirantes Highway and entering Marginal Tietê. So, I thought I would arrive at Guarulhos Airport very early, as I was unsure of the blessed traffic I could find on Dutra Highway, near the airport entrance interchanges.

No traffic on the way to Guarulhos Airport. Thanks to God, my trip was quick and smooth.

I arrived in Guarulhos at Terminal 2, through Checkin D gate of the Departures area at 5:32 am.

The flight is LA4784 and was scheduled to take off at 8:35 am, with little time off, I decided to observe the movement of passengers boarding by LATAM through the check-in counters. Indeed, from the image it is possible to 'feel' that the month of November brought an increase in passenger demand.

LATAM check-in at Guarulhos Airport.

From the top, on the mezzanine floor of Terminal 2, I went to look at the movement of aircraft at that time at 6 am. I was thrilled to see one of LATAM's A321's shipping the vaccines to be transported to another state in Brazil.

Moment on one of LATAM flights shipping the vaccines to be transported to another state in Brazil. With more than 6 million LATAM and LATAM Cargo, it plays an important role in the mission to immunize the Brazilian population in the fight against the pandemic.

On the other hand, GRU Airport – the concessionaire that manages the Guarulhos Airport – leaves something to be desired with its super dirty windows, where it is possible to have a beautiful panoramic view of the planes in the courtyard, also a place where most people go to observe relatives inside from the plane and say goodbye to them, even from a distance or almost impossible to see them inside the aircraft.

Checking in for the flight, I have no bags to check and LATAM innovated with the new check-in method, providing passengers flying from LATAM with a quick way to confirm boarding. Positive points in this regard.

With the tickets in hand, at 6:19 am I go to the Terminal 2 domestic departure area.

Here is an important tip for passengers who have a flight scheduled during this departure period, Guarulhos can be a little big for the passenger If you are traveling for the first time and boarding at the busiest international airport in the country, it is important to try to arrive 30 minutes before the time estimated by the company.

I go through the boarding turnstile and head for the x-ray area, as I said, this is the area that takes the longest and which is particularly the part I "hate the most", precisely because of the delay caused by people wanting to pass X-ray with objects that is detectable where security asks the person to return to retrieve the objects. To give you an idea, my line was shorter and it became the longest until it was my turn to go for the x-ray, precisely because the person in front of me did not remove personal metal objects from his body. (Here passengers can often miss their flight if they board at the last minute).

My passage through the x-ray was super smooth and quick, since I am already used to what is allowed and what is not allowed. To help in this process, I usually board with all the detectable things in the backpack, such as coins, the cap I already remove and put on the tray to be checked by the security team and what is not allowed as carry-on baggage I already put in the suitcase to be dispatched in the hold of the aircraft.

At 6:51 I arrive at the departure gate and the Boeing 787-9, registration PS-LAA (Papa Sierra – Lima Apha Alpha) was already at the gate at position 406. Soon I perform some external clicks of the aircraft in the apron.

We were the first to board the aircraft before the passengers and together with the crew at 7:04 am. My seat is 07A for business class – Premium Business LATAM.   It's a day to enjoy all the comfort that LATAM has to offer its customers.

After more than an hour on board the aircraft, it was more than enough to know all the details of LATAM Brasil Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and, in addition to having a quick conversation with the flight captains, Harley Meneses – Captain and Operations Director of LATAM Brasil, together with Captain Allan Silveira in the First Officer seat.

On the left, Captain Harley Meneses, Operations Director at LATAM Brasil. On the right, Captain Allan Silveira.

“Our flight will average 3:20, the weather in Manaus is hot, around 31 degrees during arrival and our route flight is good. So, our flight will be very smooth today” – said Captain Harley to MORE THAN FLY.

At 8:24 am, the ground crew performs the final work to clear the flight, ten minutes ahead of schedule, Captain Harley held the traditional speech with everyone on board the aircraft talking about the flight and the temperature in Manaus upon arrival.

Super punctual, flight LA4784 is released by Solo Guarulhos ready to fly exactly at the scheduled time at 08:35. The Lima Alpha Alpha starts the pushback and at 8:37 am the number 1 engine of the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 that powers the Boeing 787 is activated.

We leave APRON and the Boeing 787 starts taxiing via taxiway H (hotel). Guarulhos currently operates with 09L headers for takeoffs and 09R landings. The Dreamliner smoothly enters taxiway B (Bravo) and continues on the ground until it joins taxiway G (Golf) que leva which leads towards the head of runway 09L.

Head of runway 09L at São Paulo International Airport - Guarulhos.

Without stopping at the stop bar, the PS-LAA is allowed to enter runway 09L and our take-off is immediate – without that pause at the headland before taking off – the two Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines sound softly increasing power and the Boeing starts its takeoff from runway 09L in Guarulhos at 08:45. It is already possible to notice the low noise level that the aircraft produces during take-off, leaving it with a quieter sound in the cabin compared to other aircraft in the category.

Terminal 2 is operated by LATAM in Guarulhos.

We left Guarulhos ground and quickly reached the flight altitude of 2800 feet and began a left turn and immediately a slight right turn to heading 056°. I didn't talk to the flight captains about which departure procedure we would use on our flight, however, due to the route it was clear that the flight to Manaus was scheduled to execute the departure plan RNAV EDLUT 1A with transition in the fixed UKBEV.

We reached 13,400 feet, exactly at this point we blocked the EDLUT fixed – which is close to the small town of Igarata, in the Vale do Paraíba region of the state of São Paulo – and started to “turn” with a left turn to the heading 001°, we then crossed through a large layer of clouds that unfortunately it was not possible to notice the beauty that the region offers in terms of the local landscape. Also due to the climb and maintaining the 001° course, we arrived at level FL190 (flight altitude 19,000 feet) near the Jaguari Reservoir and bordering the cities of Piracaia and Extrema, south of Minas Gerais.

Flying at 19,000 feet of altitude. In the image, Represa Jaguari and Fernão Dias Highway in the region of Jaguary Quarry in Bragança Paulista, SP.

At 28,300 feet (FL283) we reach our UKBEV Transition Fixture – near the southern region of the city of Mogi Mirim – the Boeing 787 then starts a slight right turn to 357° and flies towards VOR Pirassununga (PSN), at 34,000 feet (FL340) near the city of Santa Rita do Passa Quatro. At the NIGBU fix, the Dreamliner makes one more turn to fly a small nautical mile in flight along heading 310°, then enter via UM417 airway.

At FL340, we turn right to heading 347° and join the UM417 airway through the fixed REPAX – close to Santa Eudóxia, north of the city of São Carlos, in the interior of São Paulo. Flying at 36,000 feet (FL360)), equivalent to 10,972 meters of altitude, it is possible to have a complete view of the small town Jaboticabal located in the interior of São Paulo.

Over the state of Goiás, near the city of Rio Verde, we reached our cruise flight at 38,000 feet (FL380)) – flying equivalent to 11,582 meters, with a ground speed of 456 knots, approximately 880 hm/h.

The flight to Manaus still had another two hours and ten minutes to land, even after the resumption of flights, LATAM, as ANVISA's standard of safety and standards, is not offering in-flight service on domestic flights – so I take the liberty of knowing the in-flight entertainment that the airline offers its passengers flying on Premium Business.

Premium Business LATAM.

Uflight entertainment called LATAM Play, passengers have at their disposal more than 700 episodes of series, more than 100 movies, a wide range of music and playlists accordingly with the style that the passenger desires – from classic rock to Pop – as well as games where you can choose which type you want to have fun playing during the flight.

Browsing through LATAM Play I chose to watch the movie “Fast and Furious 9”, one of which was featured on the screen as an option to watch. To really become a real “flying cinema”, I tilted my seat to 180° transforming it into a comfortable bed. As I'm six feet tall, I felt super comfortable in the seat and there was still a lot of legroom left, great for people who are taller than me.

Still talking about the comfort of the seat, LATAM has incorporated a new, softer blanket in its new Premium Business, which controls the temperature and a bigger pillow for passenger comfort. The mattress is designed with Spacer Fabric technology, a material developed by NASA that regulates temperature, ensures airflow and soothes the body's pressure points during sleep.

Our flight to Manaus remains calm, comfortable and without any no turbulances. Another detail that LATAM took care of was the layout of the Premium Business seats, the Brazilian airline configured its planes for long-haul flights with a 1-2-1 seat configuration 'interchangeable' with the front seat. The seat 7A is flush with the window on the left side of the aircraft, while seat 6A is slightly away from the window to the left side.

The airline executive cabin also offers its Business customers, a clothes hanger, 110-volt universal socket, USB ports and headphone jacks, which are discreetly located on the right side of the seat almost close to the head, all this for the passenger to enjoy the good stereo sound that the system offers (depending on the type of headphone the customer is using)..

Flying on the UM417 airway, I was curious to know exactly where the Dreamliner was flying at the moment and I realize that we are flying very close to Lucas do Rio Verde and Sinop cities – o  the "nortão" of the state of Mato Grosso (which Sinop is also LATAM's newest destination linking Sinop – Brasília) with just an hour and six minutes to go before the descent procedure begins. Through in-flight entertainment through LATAM Play, the company even offers a menu to see the geographic position that the plane currently flies on the map – I particularly love knowing the geographic positions, you can already see how much I love it just for describing it here in this article every detail exactly where the flight takes – the system even has an option for a “HUD” view identical to the pilot's panel with information on GPS, altitude, speed and the direction you are flying.

Flight information on the seat screen.

Flying over the north of Mato Grosso on the border with the State of Amazonas at 38,000 feet, the 787 starts to enter another layer of clouds that is no longer possible to have the panoramic view of the Amazon region. We cross over the VOR and the Alta Floresta Airport (ATF) and the Dreamliner turns left to heading 323°, leaving the UM417 airway and entering the UZ33 airway.

With 53 nautical miles flying the UZ33, the Boeing 787 locks the SOTBI fix and makes a right turn to heading 345°. Thus, it leaves the UZ33 airway and starts flying the UZ21 airway. The fixed SOTBI region is very close to the Santa Rosa region, which borders the state of Pará and the most extreme part of the state of Mato Grosso, bathed by the São Manuel Rivers with the Jurema River where both form a delta joining the Tapajos River.

After flying thirty minutes of flight, something around 333 nautical miles on the UZ21 airway, the Dreamliner thus begins the procedure for descending to Manaus by blocking the ISIPA landline – which is almost on top of the Canumã River, in the Terra Preta region and Coata-Laranjal.

I return my seat to the upright position and fasten my seat belt – where the seat belt on the Premium Business is 3 points, similar to car seat belts – and I return to follow the beautiful Amazon landscape bathed by countless rivers and indigenous villages.

Our arrival in Manaus is by RNAV navigation using the IRUMO 1A procedure with transition in ISIPA. The Boeing 787 reduces power and the descent rate is now an average of 3,000 feet per minute. Through the large window that the Boeing 787 has towards the wing, the performances of the command surfaces are working.

At 7,500 feet of altitude (FL075), we crossed the ULVOM station – which is exactly on the margin of the huge and fantastic Amazon River in the Careiro da Várzea region – at this point there is a maximum altitude limit to fly is up to 8,000 feet (FL080), above 8,000 feet, flight is prohibited.

Flying at 4,000 feet, we blocked the ARSOS fixed-line – near the region of Paricatuba, Iranduba – and the Boeing 787 made the base curve to intercept the final approach of runway 11 at Eduardo Gomes International Airport along heading 016° at one speed relatively low at 231 knots. We continued on heading 016° until crossing the PAGEK fix –   which is on the other side of the Negro River bank at a descent rate of 1,500 feet per minute.

Marina do Davi and the River Iarapé Tarumã-açu, region of Praia da Ponta Negra, Manaus - AM.

After turning to the base leg to intercept an end of runway 11 and blocking the PAGEK fix at 2700 feet altitude at a speed of 192 knots using the RNAV (GNSS) RWY 11 procedure, the Boeing 787-9 has been practically gliding silently over the banks of the Negro River, already installed for landing with lowered and locked gear, and we intercept the runway end exactly 10 nautical miles from the runway headland to land in 2,300 feet of altitude. With only 5 nautical miles left for our touchdown, the Dreamliner crosses the Praia da Lua region at 2,000 feet at a speed of 170 knots.

Landing in Manaus (MAO) via runway 11.

At 11:07 am (local time), the PS-LAA touches down on runway 11 at Eduardo Gomes International Airport. Captains Harley and Allan performed an excellent landing by making the Boeing 787 touch the ground and decelerate smoothly.

Manaus International Airport has only one exit to enter the taxiway according to the operating runway for takeoffs and landings. In this case, when landing on runway 11, there is only an option to clear the runway by entering taxiway B (Bravo)which is located at the opposite end of runway 11. When taxiing on runway B, the Dreamliner is coordinated and ends flight LA4784 when parking at position 13 of Terminal 1.

Through the intercom, the flight attendant required passengers to land gradually by row numbers, this is already part of the “new normal” that a company increased as protocols during the pandemic.

Conclusion

It was one of the best flights I made in 12 years following the aviation market! It was a flight of innovation! The following are some important and relevant points that were highlighted:

Check-in and boarding – Flying from São Paulo to Manaus using LATAM during the resumption of flights and the reopening of countries, the agility can be seen thanks to the innovation that an airline project brought to the market with the so-called “Digital Transformation” – a new platform reduces check-in time by up to 20 minutes of waiting and service time at busy airports like Guarulhos and everything can be done in the palm of the hand by the passenger's own cell phone.

The Airplane – One board of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is enough to feel the comfort, a quieter aircraft. Thanks to on-board technology, the company's new aircraft offers its passengers a reduction in the jetleg effect more tiring.

The Premium Business –  For passengers who are constantly traveling, the new business class is comfortable, on long flights it is even possible to work with a laptop during the flight due to the space offered in the area of the table and the space next to the seat, I liked the size of screen on board with the number of entertainment the company offers. The only thing I thought could be improved is the information on the location where the headphones are plugged in to be able to hear the audio of movies, music, etc. The location had no information and it took me a few minutes to find and know where it was located, close to the head region beside the seat.

Economy Premium Class and Economy Class  – Economy Premium Class has a greater space in the region of the legs and the distance between the seats, is a little more comfort than Economy Class, both classes the headrest on the seats can be adjusted according to height that the passenger desires. The screens are slightly smaller in size compared to business class, but with the same in-flight entertainment. In addition, the classes offer USB jacks that allow you to recharge the cell phone battery and headphone jacks that are located at the bottom of the screen on the left side. For those flying past door 3 (behind the front wing), I could see that it's quieter. I didn't feel uncomfortable flying three and a half hours returning from Manaus to São Paulo aboard the aircraft.

Inflight service – Durante a pandemia o serviço de bordo foi reduzido em rotas internacionais e suspenso em rotas domésticas devido àDuring a pandemic, in-flight service was reduced on international routes and suspended on domestic routes due to ANVISA recommendation for international routes, items delivered to passengers are individually packaged and for international routes there is no in-flight service offered.

Inflight entertainment – Even without internet aboard a Boeing 787, LATAM has a fantastic way to entertain its passengers during the flight, offering more than 700 hours of premium content including movies, documentaries, series and music. A big news is a partnership with WarnerMédia through HBO Max. Passengers already have exclusive premieres and are available to watch episodes of “Friends: The Reunion” and “Raised by Wolves” on board, among other contents such as “Mare of Easttown”, “The Undoing” series, in addition to the series Wahl Street, Game of Thrones, The Nevers, Sex and the City, The Soprano and Chernobyl series, as well as the feature films Oslo, Bad Education and The Wizard of Lies.

“This exclusive alliance allows us to continue building the best inflight entertainment platform in Latin America and to offer an exceptional and unique experience for our passengers”, said Paulo Miranda, vice president of Customers for the LATAM Airlines Group.

To access a platform inside the plane, the passenger must connect to the "LATAM Play" network, go to play.latam.com.

In contact with LATAM, the airline's on-board Internet service is available on Airbus aircraft in LATAM's fleet that carry out domestic flights in Brazil and flights within South America, including all airline operations on the Rio-São Paulo airlift.

Arrival – SI really loved the aircraft arrival procedure adopted by LATAM. From now on, passengers disembark in a more orderly manner as flight attendants request through the audio intercom in the cabin. Passengers who previously unbuckled their seatbelts and stood in the cabin aisle while an aircraft taxied before the aircraft came to a complete stop, now has to wait seated in a seat to be called by the row number to climb out of the aircraft!
