Gavião Peixoto, Brazil — March 25, 2026 — Brazil has officially entered the elite group of nations capable of producing advanced supersonic fighter aircraft.
Embraer, in partnership with Saab and the Brazilian Air Force, unveiled the first F-39E Gripen fighter jet produced in Brazil during a ceremony held at Embraer’s industrial complex in Gavião Peixoto, São Paulo.
This milestone represents a major leap forward for Brazil’s aerospace and defense industry, making it the only country in Latin America with the capability to develop and manufacture high-performance combat aircraft.
Among the authorities present at the ceremony were President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Sweden’s Ambassador to Brazil Karin Wallensteen, Minister of Defense José Múcio Monteiro Filho, and Brazilian Air Force Commander Marcelo Kanitz Damasceno.
According to Bosco da Costa Junior, CEO of Embraer Defense & Security:
“Producing the Gripen in Brazil strengthens national sovereignty and significantly enhances our technological capabilities.”
Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab, emphasized the strength of the partnership:
“This achievement reflects trust, long-term vision, and true collaboration. Saab remains committed to expanding its presence in Brazil.”
The Gripen E fighters are being assembled at Embraer’s Gavião Peixoto facility using a fully integrated supply chain that includes both Brazilian and international partners.
Key components, such as aerostructures, are also produced locally at Saab’s unit in São Bernardo do Campo.
Before final delivery, each aircraft undergoes a comprehensive series of functional tests and flight trials.
Once completed, the aircraft will join the First Air Defense Group (1st GDA) at Anápolis Air Base, where Gripens are already operational in air defense missions.
The F-39E Gripen is currently the most advanced air defense platform in Brazil, designed for multi-role operations, including:
- Air superiority missions;
- Tactical reconnaissance;
- Precision strike capabilities;
- Network-centric warfare;
- Advanced sensor fusion.
Its integrated avionics and real-time data-sharing capabilities provide enhanced situational awareness and coordinated operational response in complex combat environments.
The agreement signed in 2014 between Brazil and Sweden includes:
- 36 aircraft total;
- 28 single-seat Gripen E;
- 8 two-seat Gripen F.
Deliveries began in 2020, with 10 aircraft already in service.
Since February 2026, the Gripen has been actively supporting Brazil’s air defense alert system, operating from Anápolis Air Base to protect the nation’s capital region.
With domestic production now established, Brazil strengthens its position as:
- A regional aerospace and defense hub;
- A future exporter of advanced military aircraft;
- A leader in technological innovation in Latin America.
The production line is also prepared to support future international customers of the Gripen program.
